SPEECH TIPS

ELEVATOR PITCH / TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF

This is a 30-60 second look into who you really are and not about what you do.  Remember, you are the main topic; do not let the topic be about your cause or others.

THINGS TO TALK ABOUT
1.  Talk about things you have accomplished   
     a.  Briefly explain what was accomplished and its significance
     b.  eg. I was ranked #1 in my graduating class of 400 students
     c.  eg.. I helped to coordinate 100 volunteers to help raise $4000 for the Relay for Life Foundation
2.  Groups or Organizations
     a.  Think of Leadership Roles or Positions you held
     b.  What was your contribution to the efforts of your group
     c.  What did you accomplish? (increase in revenue, helped increased students achievement)
     d.  Think in terms of numbers or data you can draw on to show an increase in productivity,  
          effectiveness, and or efficiency.
     e.  Showcase how you were able to decrease costs, decrease the amount of time, decrease waste...
     f.  Explain how your efforts helped to create change (eg. new recycling program)
3.  Volunteer Efforts
     a.  What you did
     b.  What you accomplished
     c.  How many people you affected/helped
     d.  How often you do the action
     e.  New developments and endeavors (expansion to other areas or building the organization
4.  Words to Use
     a.  Use words that showed your actions (led, managed, created, coordinated, directed, etc.)

THINGS NOT TO TALK ABOUT
1.  Do not list things you do (a resume provides this information already)
2.  Do not talk about the amount of siblings you have or about your family (unless its absolutely related)
3.  Do not complain
4.  Do not compare yourself to others (This is about you!)
